Fibre and it's crucial involvement in detoxification

When it comes to detox, most of us think about liver support and green juice. However, one important and often overlooked requirement for effective detoxification is ….. fibre! In fact, fibre is crucial to our body effectively eliminating both endogenous and exogenous toxins.

Fibre supports detoxification in a few different ways. First, it binds with bile (containing toxins condensed and eliminated from the liver) and pulls it out of the body. Secondly, fibre binds with heavy metals and removes them from the body. Additionally, fibre removes the toxins that are released by pathogenic gut bacteria, as well as excess hormones and other metabolic wastes.

Astoundingly, nearly all Canadians are deficient in fibre. For this reason, we all need more fibre!  For best results, it is helpful to consume both a variety of sources and types of fibre including soluble and insoluble. If you, like most Canadians, find it difficult to obtain the daily recommended intake of fiber (25 grams for women and 38 grams for men), you may benefit from supplementation.

Our fibre of choice is NutriChem’s Gastro Guard. It is tasteless, odorless, and dissolves easily in water and smoothies and can be easily added to other foods as well. On top of supporting daily detox, Gastro Guard is soothing and reparative for the lining of the gut, improves bowel regularity, and is a powerful prebiotic that feeds healthy gut bacteria in the intestinal system.

Some important tips when introducing a fibre supplement into your diet include:

  • Start slowly and build your way up to the suggested daily dose
  • Drink lots of water! This helps with the movement of fibre through the body and improves ease and frequency of bowel movements.
  • Most importantly, should you experience any gas or bloating when you supplement with fibre, consider this important information! This is a sign that you may have dysbiosis, an overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria in the gut. NutriChem is well known for our highly experienced team of clinicians including Naturopathic Doctors, Clinical Pharmacists and Registered Nutritionists who specialize in gut health. If you think you may have an imbalanced gut, consider scheduling in with one of our clinicians today!
