The important role of healthy dietary fat for female fertility

When it comes to fertility, the F word is a good word! F is for fat, specifically clean sources of polyunsaturated and omega 3 fats. For years, we have been told that fat is bad and that it contributes to many diseases including heart disease, cancer and obesity. Recently, however, the recommendations regarding fat have shifted. While they continue to recommend staying away from bad fats such as trans-fats, more and more natural health practitioners are recommending their patients regularly consume healthy fats. Healthy fats are especially important when it comes to female fertility.

Healthy fat plays a crucial role in hormone production and balance. Many people don’t know that hormones are actually partially made from fat. Therefore, if the diet is low in healthy fat, hormone production is negatively impacted. Additionally, man vitamins, including some that are important for fertility, are fat soluble. This means that incorporating a variety of healthy fats into the daily diet will increase the absorption of these vitamins.

A special type of fats, Omega 3 fats, have been shown to improve egg quality and prolong reproductive lifespan. A larger window for fertility and healthier eggs means a greater chance of conceiving.

Sources of healthy fats that you can begin incorporating today include but are not limited to:

  • Walnuts

  • Sunflower Seeds

  • Flax Seeds

  • Chia Seeds

  • Avocado

  • Raw olive oil (always buy high quality olive oil stored in a dark glass bottle)

  • Avocado oil for cooking (always buy high quality avocado oil in a dark glass bottle)

  • Coconut oil for cooking and baking

  • Cold water fish

If you are trying to conceive, consider incorporating one source of healthy fats with every single meal and snack. This dietary change is one small step you can start today.
