Lysine, or L-lysine, is one of eight amino acids essential for human health. Collections of amino acids are known as peptides, the latter which form the structures of proteins. Lysine cannot be manufactured by the body, and must be obtained through dietary sources or via supplementation. Our requirements for lysine include the formation of antibodies necessary in immune responses to bacteria and viruses. Hormone production also involves lysine. In addition, it is used in collagen production, so it is vital to tissue repair after surgery or injury. In children, lysine is also essential to bone formation and growth. The most popular application of lysine supplementation is prevention and treatment of the virus herpes. Lysine appears to suppress the replication of this virus in individuals who are susceptible to cold sores or genital herpes outbreaks.
